Who Can Participate
To help ensure safe and successful matches, all applicants must:
- Have no criminal history or pending charges related to crimes against a person or property
- Have no substantiated case of abuse of any kind
- Provide at least three references who can speak to your lifestyle, character, and reliability. For those looking for housing, this should include a positive landlord reference.
Our team carefully reviews each application as part of our screening process.
A Note About Matching
We work hard to find strong, compatible matches—but no placement is guaranteed.
There are often more people looking for housing than there are homes available. Home sharing is a mutual decision, and homeowners ultimately choose who they feel is the best fit for their home and lifestyle. Taking the time to find the right match is an important part of the process.
What Makes a Good Home Share Match
Successful home shares are built on more than just space—they rely on communication, flexibility, and mutual respect.
We look for participants who are:
- Open and flexible
- Interested in building a positive living arrangement
- Comfortable sharing space with others
- Willing to take time to find the right match
Many people offering their homes are older adults or individuals who value having another person in the home for companionship, peace of mind, or occasional help. Others are simply looking to share their space and receive a financial contribution.
Every home share is different, and we work with you to define what works best for your situation.
Types of Home Share Arrangements

Shared Support
(Tasks & Financial Contribution)
Some homeowners are looking for light assistance around the house in addition to a financial contribution. This may include up to approximately 10–12 hours per week of support, such as:
- Light housekeeping
- Grocery shopping or errands
- Yard work
- Pet care

Financial Contribution Only
(No Routine Tasks)
Not all home shares involve services. Many homeowners simply want to share their space and receive a financial contribution, without expecting regular assistance.
These arrangements can be a great fit if you’re looking for companionship or added household presence without additional responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
It’s normal to have questions when exploring a home sharing arrangement. These FAQs can help you understand what to expect from the process.
How long does the process take?
Finding the right home share match takes time. We focus on compatibility and comfort rather than speed, and we cannot guarantee a match for everyone.
We encourage homeowners to approach the process with patience as we look for someone who truly fits your home and lifestyle.
What is the process?
Our process includes:
- A simple application
- Background and reference checks
- An interview to learn more about you and what you’re looking for
When we identify a potential match, we contact both people. If there is mutual interest, we arrange an introduction meeting facilitated by our staff.
If both participants want to move forward, a two-week trial period allows you to experience the arrangement before making a longer commitment. During this time, the person moving in should maintain their current housing in case the match doesn’t work out.
We help create an initial written agreement before the trial begins and a revised final agreement after the trial period. Our team stays involved and available for support for as long as you decide to live together.
Do I choose who I live with?
Yes. You tell us what you’re looking for, and we suggest potential matches based on that. It is always your decision whether you would like to move forward with a home share agreement.
I value my privacy and alone time. How does that work with a home share?
This is a very common and important question. During your interview, you’ll share what privacy, quiet time, and personal space look like for you.
We look for matches whose schedules, lifestyles, and personalities align with your preferences. You set the household expectations, and the written agreement helps ensure those expectations are clear and respected.
What if I decide I no longer want to home share?
All home share arrangements eventually come to an end. The written agreement outlines the notice period you and your housemate agree to give each other.
If the time comes to end the arrangement, our staff can help you navigate that conversation to ensure the process is respectful and smooth.

I’m nervous about having someone new in my home. Will I be safe?
Your safety is our top priority. Every applicant goes through a thorough screening process that includes background checks, references, and interviews before being considered as a potential match.
Many homeowners find that having a compatible person in the home increases their sense of security, companionship, and peace of mind.
What does it cost to participate?
Home Together is free to apply. If you choose to move forward after your interview, there may be a modest background screening fee of $60 to help cover the cost of required background checks. This fee can be reduced or waived if it presents a financial hardship.
If I have a criminal record, can I participate?
Safety is one of the most important parts of home sharing. Because participants are sharing private homes, we have strict screening requirements.
We are not able to accept applicants with convictions for crimes against a person or property, pending charges related to those crimes, or any substantiated history of abuse.
What is Home Together’s role after a match is made?
Our support doesn’t end once you’re matched.
Home Together staff from Media Fellowship House check in regularly and are always available if questions, concerns, or changes arise. We’re here to help you navigate the experience for as long as the home share continues.
