The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee the right to due process of law, a fundamental principle that protects individuals from unfair treatment by the government. This presentation will examine the meaning and scope of due process, who it applies to, and how it functions in criminal, civil, and administrative legal matters. It will also explore how courts have interpreted due process over time and highlight the challenges this essential constitutional protection faces today.

About the Speaker

Geoff Schoos is a former public high school teacher and seasoned attorney who dedicated more than 30 years to advancing justice in civil law, including housing, employment, public benefits, elder law, and nonprofit governance. A passionate advocate for equitable access to legal support, he founded the Rhode Island Center for Law and Public Policy and organized the nation’s first full-time Medical Legal Partnership. Geoff is the author of a book on access to justice, a contributor to the CUNY Law Review, and a presenter at the Osher Learning Institute at the University of Rhode Island, where he continues to share his knowledge and commitment to public service.
