Honoring Martha Balderson Mason Burton

Media Fellowship House honors the life and legacy of Martha Balderson Mason Burton who passed away on September 18th, 2025. Martha Burton, daughter of Sam and Ethel Mason, was born and raised in South Media, where she quickly distinguished herself through her commitment to service, integrity, and perseverance. Inspired by the legacy of her mother, Ethel Mason, Martha dedicated her life to uplifting her neighbors and strengthening her community. Alongside her husband, James Burton, a respected leader who managed the Media Post Office, she raised seven children while continuing her own education, earning her GED through a program at Media Fellowship House. Her volunteerism and natural leadership made her an invaluable part of the Media Fellowship House, where she was later honored with the prestigious Spirit Hall of Fame Award in recognition of her lifelong dedication to service.

Martha’s vision and determination gave rise to the Corner House, a vital community hub created with the support of local leaders and the Nether Providence Commissioners. As its first director, she oversaw a wide range of programs such as early childhood education, after-school activities, scouting, senior services, and summer learning that provided safety, guidance, and opportunity for countless families. The Corner House also welcomed students from Cheyney University and Swarthmore College as interns, further extending its reach and impact. This work later evolved into the Ethel Mason Child Development Center, honoring her mother and continuing a family tradition of service to children and families.

Her leadership extended further through the South Media Community Center, where she launched innovative programs to enrich the lives of local youth and strengthen families in partnership with schools, courts, and government agencies. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Woodrow Wilson Park was renamed Martha Burton Community Park, a symbol of unity, progress, and hope. For decades, Martha Burton embodied the spirit of service and justice, demonstrating how one individual’s dedication can transform generations. Ms. Burton, your work is complete, now go rest in eternal peace.
