SUMMARY:Speaker Event - The Nile Swim Club Of Yeadon: A History
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Nile Swim Club in Yeadon is a story of perseverance that highlights an incredible part of Black history in Delaware County. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today. \n\n\n\nWhen it opened in July of 1959\, the Nile Swim Club welcomed over one thousand people to its pool. The only problem that day\, remembers Bill Mellix\, then 13\, “None of us knew how to swim.” In the 1930s\, an African American middle class began moving into Yeadon\, leading to one of the nation’s first Black suburban enclaves. By the end of the 1950s\, Ebony magazine dubbed Yeadon Philadelphia’s “Black Mainline.” The town remained majority white however\, and strict racial segregation was enforced\, including the local pool. Typical for the time\, white residents maintained it as a private swim club to avoid public desegregation laws. The response of Yeadon’s African Americans proved unique. They built their own pool and opened it to all\, regardless of race. It attracted members from the Philadelphia area\, including New Jersey and offered a variety of programming. Celebrities such as Harry Belafonte and members of the Supremes visited. Decades later\, hip hop icon D.J. Cash Money and actor Will Smith started out at the Nile as MCs. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the incredible history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today.”The Swim Club fell into bankruptcy in the 1990s\, went through that three times and was nearly shuttered. But the community rallied to preserve the Club\, under the direction of Anthony Patterson\, current Club President\, one who grew up across the street from the Nile. He was the youngest of 19 children\, raised by his mom after his father Isaac\, a prominent AME minister\, died at an early age. \n\n\n\nBio: Robert J. Kodosky\, Ph.D. (Temple University) chairs the dept. of history at West Chester University where he teaches courses in American military and diplomatic history and serves as the faculty adviser for the Student Veteran Group. He is also the author of Psychological Operations American Style: The Joint United States Public Affairs Office\, Vietnam and Beyond (Lexington\, 2007)\, Tuskegee in Philadelphia: Rising to the Challenge (The History Press\, 2020) and co-author of Construction Ahead: Making American History Since 1865 (Great River Learning\, 2024).

SUMMARY:Workshop 3: Paul Patchel Conversation Series
DESCRIPTION:Paul Patchel Conversation Series 2024\n\n\n\nStruggling in conversations or relationships with others of differing viewpoints? Join our three workshops designed to help you engage in constructive dialogues with individuals of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. \n\n\n\nWorkshop 3: From Practice to Everyday EncountersParticipants who joined us for either of our first two workshops are invited to return for a follow-up workshop Together\, we will reflect on our collective experiences and the application of our newfound knowledge. \n\n\n\nHaving thought-provoking conversations in a controlled setting is extremely valuable.  But how do we have difficult conversations in settings that are not structured and with people who may not have been “trained” to have productive conversations? Some of the questions we will explore are: \n\n\n\n\nHow do we set informal ground rules and expectations?\n\n\n\nHow do we maintain our composure?\n\n\n\nHow do we convince ourselves to be a little vulnerable and take the first step?\n\n\n\nHow do we maximize the chance the other person will maintain theirs?\n\n\n\nHow do we help ensure each person walks away feeling “good” about the fact you had the conversation?\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to sign up for any or all workshops as part of the Paul Patchel Conversation Series 2024. Space is limited to 30 attendees. Learn more and register here:  \n\n\n\n\nI’m interested!
