DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of service and fun as we create a beautiful garden at Martha Burton Park in South Media\, Nether Providence Township. This community event is co-organized by South Media Neighbors United\, Nether Providence Township\, and Media Fellowship House.Family friendly activities for all ages including: planting\, paver painting\, seed planting. Tools will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own. Parking is limited and we encourage you to carpool\, bike\, or walk if you can! \n\n\n\nA great opportunity to complete community service hours! \n\n\n\nRAIN DATE: Saturday\, June 15\, 9am – 1pm \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Volunteer\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Martha Burton Park\n\n\n\nThis half-acre pocket park at Ronaldson and Allen Streets in South Media was officially established in 1979 as a memorial for those who served in World War I. The tract was originally presented to the township in 1929 by prominent attorney and township resident A. B. Geary and his family.Mrs. Burton\, who has lived in South Media her entire life\, established and ran (in the late 60s and early 70s) a Community House On The Corner Of Wallingford Ave and Vernon St known as the South Media Community Center. She helped with the creation of youth summer jobs and organized activities for teenagers in the community\, including a pool for the community.  The center also became the the home of the South Media Boy Scout Troop.  Her guidance and leadership helped countless young teens in the community – instilling hard work and dedication that extends into generations. The park was renamed in 2020 in honor of her service to the community.

DESCRIPTION:Delco Gives Day is a 24-hour county-wide day of giving/community celebration\, hosted by The Foundation for Delaware County\, where people will make a donation to their favorite nonprofits (or peruse new ones) on the delcogives.org site. Each donation is eligible for bonus money provided by the Foundation\, and there will be cash prizes sponsored by local businesses given out throughout the day. The inaugural Delco Gives Day will be held May 8 – 9\, 2024 (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Online activity will be accompanied by a number of celebrations held throughout the county that bring together nonprofits\, donors\, businesses\, and volunteers to showcase the power of collective action and community giving. Delco Gives Day is more than just a fundraising event; it’s a celebration of the Delco generosity and community spirit. \n\n\n\nThere are two ways to support us for Delco Gives Day:1. SUMMARY:Speaker Event - The Nile Swim Club Of Yeadon: A History
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Nile Swim Club in Yeadon is a story of perseverance that highlights an incredible part of Black history in Delaware County. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today. \n\n\n\nWhen it opened in July of 1959\, the Nile Swim Club welcomed over one thousand people to its pool. The only problem that day\, remembers Bill Mellix\, then 13\, “None of us knew how to swim.” In the 1930s\, an African American middle class began moving into Yeadon\, leading to one of the nation’s first Black suburban enclaves. By the end of the 1950s\, Ebony magazine dubbed Yeadon Philadelphia’s “Black Mainline.” The town remained majority white however\, and strict racial segregation was enforced\, including the local pool. Typical for the time\, white residents maintained it as a private swim club to avoid public desegregation laws. The response of Yeadon’s African Americans proved unique. They built their own pool and opened it to all\, regardless of race. It attracted members from the Philadelphia area\, including New Jersey and offered a variety of programming. Celebrities such as Harry Belafonte and members of the Supremes visited. Decades later\, hip hop icon D.J. Cash Money and actor Will Smith started out at the Nile as MCs. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the incredible history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today.”The Swim Club fell into bankruptcy in the 1990s\, went through that three times and was nearly shuttered. But the community rallied to preserve the Club\, under the direction of Anthony Patterson\, current Club President\, one who grew up across the street from the Nile. He was the youngest of 19 children\, raised by his mom after his father Isaac\, a prominent AME minister\, died at an early age. \n\n\n\nBio: Robert J. Kodosky\, Ph.D. (Temple University) chairs the dept. of history at West Chester University where he teaches courses in American military and diplomatic history and serves as the faculty adviser for the Student Veteran Group. He is also the author of Psychological Operations American Style: The Joint United States Public Affairs Office\, Vietnam and Beyond (Lexington\, 2007)\, Tuskegee in Philadelphia: Rising to the Challenge (The History Press\, 2020) and co-author of Construction Ahead: Making American History Since 1865 (Great River Learning\, 2024).

At this event\, hear an excerpt from Episode 3\, “Growing Up Black in HBNS: A Child’s Perspective (School\, Play\, Love)\,” and learn from participants and project organizers about the role of memory and story in preserving our communities. Tips for starting your own memory project with your family or local community will be shared! \n\n\n\nMore about Making a Homeplace podcast: \n\n\n\nThis podcast explores the rich culture and history of the historically Black neighborhood of Swarthmore (HBNS) through collective oral history and storytelling. Over the last 15 years\, the neighborhood has seen rapid gentrification that has threatened to erase the history and presence of its vibrant Black communities. This year\, two individuals join a collection of 23 existing inductees who serve as role models for all who find value in their lives\, accomplishments and commitment to advocacy for justice.

The purpose of UNITED FOR JUSTICE is to act on issues of Social Justice. With a strong belief in building and caring for diverse communities\, we have installations in four Media locations for those who want to reflect on social justice and peace-building. Plaques in each site honor Black people killed by police. United for Justice aims to build compassion for the families affected.  \n\n\n\nCome learn about this student-led art & activism project sponsored by Media Fellowship House\, Media-Providence Friends School\, Media Friends Meeting\, Providence Friends Meeting & the Sandy Bank Burial Ground Committee. \n\n\n\nMedia Fellowship House will be hosting an open house from 12-3 pm on Sunday\, November 12th.

DESCRIPTION:Following UDTJ’s successful community meet-ups during Pride on State in June of 2023\, the organizers of Delaware County Pride have launched monthly community meet-ups for the LGBTQQIA+ community in Delaware County to foster community building\, growth\, and safe spaces to thrive. Each month will feature different topics and occasional social events mixed in. These events are 18+ and we encourage everyone to join and come make friends together! \n\n\n\nLet’s keep making history together and create a stronger and more vibrant LGBTQQIA+ community in Delaware County!
