This exciting project\, led by mural artists Stephanie Untz and Emmanuel Fitzpatrick\, is open to participants ages 10 and up. Younger children are welcome to attend\, if closely supervised by a parent/guardian. Come be a part of this creative celebration!Depending on the progress made at our first painting event on Saturday\, September 14th\, this second mural painting date is subject to change. An email will be sent to all registered guests. This community mural will be unveiled at our 80th Anniversary Street Party on Sunday\, October. 13th\, 1-5pm. SUMMARY:Fair Housing Tester Training
DESCRIPTION:The Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania utilizes trained fair housing “testers” or mystery shoppers to help investigate allegations of housing discrimination. This workshop will train new testers on basic fair housing rights and responsibilities and on the process and procedures used in the testing of rental housing. After the training\, attendees will be able to participate in the Housing Equality Center’s fair housing testing program\, helping to combat discrimination in our region. Testers are compensated for their time and expenses. The discussion will shed light on the challenges they have faced but also highlight the powerful lessons learned in navigating social justice organizing in Delaware County. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of U.D.T.J. is to fight for equality and justice based on race\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, and across all intersectional identities. They seek to end systemic inequalities in Upper Darby\, Delaware County\, and beyond through community events\, service\, and programs. UDTJ stands for their 4 core principles: understanding\, devotion\, take action\, and justice. \n\n\n\nKyle T. McIntyre was born and raised in Upper Darby. Kyle graduated from Upper Darby High School in 2016 and Temple University with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science in 2020. Kyle recently graduated Temple University in 2021 with his Master Degree in Public Policy. \n\n\n\nKyle got involved because as an openly gay man he believes understanding intersectionality is part of the solution to discrimination in America. After briefly being involved in local politics and graduating from one of the most diverse high schools in the country\, he knew Upper Darby was not immune from the inequalities facing many marginalized communities in America. After the murder of George Floyd\, Kyle waited a week and saw no protests in Upper Darby\, starting with a Facebook event he partnered with the other co-founders to form U.D.T.J. to bring activism and momentum to Delaware County. \n\n\n\nKyle is passionately advocates for LGBTQ rights and the creation of inclusive LGBTQ+ spaces in Delaware County. In addition\, as a policy focus\, Kyle has a lot of passion for inclusionary zoning\, housing affordability\, community service and police accountability.

The tract was originally presented to the township in 1929 by prominent attorney and township resident A. B. Geary and his family.Mrs. Burton\, who has lived in South Media her entire life\, established and ran (in the late 60s and early 70s) a Community House On The Corner Of Wallingford Ave and Vernon St known as the South Media Community Center. She helped with the creation of youth summer jobs and organized activities for teenagers in the community\, including a pool for the community.  The center also became the the home of the South Media Boy Scout Troop.  Her guidance and leadership helped countless young teens in the community – instilling hard work and dedication that extends into generations. The park was renamed in 2020 in honor of her service to the community.

DESCRIPTION:Delco Gives Day is a 24-hour county-wide day of giving/community celebration\, hosted by The Foundation for Delaware County\, where people will make a donation to their favorite nonprofits (or peruse new ones) on the delcogives.org site. Each donation is eligible for bonus money provided by the Foundation\, and there will be cash prizes sponsored by local businesses given out throughout the day. The inaugural Delco Gives Day will be held May 8 – 9\, 2024 (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Online activity will be accompanied by a number of celebrations held throughout the county that bring together nonprofits\, donors\, businesses\, and volunteers to showcase the power of collective action and community giving. Delco Gives Day is more than just a fundraising event; it’s a celebration of the Delco generosity and community spirit. \n\n\n\nThere are two ways to support us for Delco Gives Day:1. SUMMARY:Speaker Event - The Nile Swim Club Of Yeadon: A History
DESCRIPTION:The history of the Nile Swim Club in Yeadon is a story of perseverance that highlights an incredible part of Black history in Delaware County. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today. \n\n\n\nWhen it opened in July of 1959\, the Nile Swim Club welcomed over one thousand people to its pool. The only problem that day\, remembers Bill Mellix\, then 13\, “None of us knew how to swim.” In the 1930s\, an African American middle class began moving into Yeadon\, leading to one of the nation’s first Black suburban enclaves. By the end of the 1950s\, Ebony magazine dubbed Yeadon Philadelphia’s “Black Mainline.” The town remained majority white however\, and strict racial segregation was enforced\, including the local pool. Typical for the time\, white residents maintained it as a private swim club to avoid public desegregation laws. The response of Yeadon’s African Americans proved unique. They built their own pool and opened it to all\, regardless of race. It attracted members from the Philadelphia area\, including New Jersey and offered a variety of programming. Celebrities such as Harry Belafonte and members of the Supremes visited. Decades later\, hip hop icon D.J. Cash Money and actor Will Smith started out at the Nile as MCs. Join author Robert Kodosky as he reveals the incredible history and legacy of the Nile Swim Club and the vibrant landmark it remains today.”The Swim Club fell into bankruptcy in the 1990s\, went through that three times and was nearly shuttered. But the community rallied to preserve the Club\, under the direction of Anthony Patterson\, current Club President\, one who grew up across the street from the Nile. He was the youngest of 19 children\, raised by his mom after his father Isaac\, a prominent AME minister\, died at an early age. \n\n\n\nBio: Robert J. Kodosky\, Ph.D. (Temple University) chairs the dept. of history at West Chester University where he teaches courses in American military and diplomatic history and serves as the faculty adviser for the Student Veteran Group. He is also the author of Psychological Operations American Style: The Joint United States Public Affairs Office\, Vietnam and Beyond (Lexington\, 2007)\, Tuskegee in Philadelphia: Rising to the Challenge (The History Press\, 2020) and co-author of Construction Ahead: Making American History Since 1865 (Great River Learning\, 2024).

We’d love to help you tell yours.\n\n\n\nJoin us this March as Media Fellowship House welcomes local storyteller Megan Hicks to facilitate two engaging workshops.  \n\n\n\nMegan will impart her wealth of storytelling techniques cultivated over years of experience. Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn from Megan as she guides them in crafting and sharing their own personal stories. Her expertise promises to inspire and empower attendees to harness the power of storytelling in their own lives. \n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Listening for the Details that Set You on Your Life’s Path \n\n\n\nIn the initial storytelling workshop we will explore the unique circumstances and pivotal moments that have brought you to this point – where you’re ready to reach out and share your story with the world. \n\n\n\nDuring this session\, you’ll be encouraged to jot down notes\, make lists\, engage in dialogue\, and listen intently for the details that have shaped your life’s path. Join our three workshops designed to help you engage in constructive dialogues with individuals of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. \n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Exploring Conscious and Unconscious BiasThe first preparatory workshop will explore conscious and unconscious bias.  Our biases often color how we hear other people’s stories and what we think about their situations. And understanding the other person’s biases can help explain their hopes\, fears\, and perspectives.Some of the questions we will explore are: \n\n\n\n\nHow do you identify your own biases?\n\n\n\nHow do you identify other people’s biases?\n\n\n\nWhat do you do about it when you notice them?\n\n\n\nAre all biases bad?\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to sign up for any or all workshops as part of the Paul Patchel Conversation Series 2024.
