SUMMARY:MAC Event: Playreading: Everybody's Hometown by Noah Mannix
DESCRIPTION:Original Playreading Series:\n\n\n\nEverybody’s Hometown by Noah Mannix\n\n\n\nOn Easter weekend of 1964\, civil rights demonstrations in Chester led to the imprisonment of many in the Media courthouse parking lot\, exposed to the elements and without proper accommodations\, behind a large iron gate. As Brother\, Sister\, Mother\, and Broomall’s Lake decide what to do and what is right\, members of North Media’s Black community past and present tell their stories of growing up in a place whose slogan is “Everybody’s Hometown.” A poetic ethnography\, this play was built on recorded interviews with North Media community members at The Media Theatre in 2022 and community engagement with the congregation of Second Baptist Church of Media. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Playwright\n\n\n\nNoah Mannix (they/them) is a playwright\, theatermaker\, and teaching artist based in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Noah is a founding artist of The AV Club (’24-current). They worked with Wise Possum Puppetry as a playwright to help write “Mr. Nutterbocker’s 7-Year Plan”\, a family puppet show in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival (‘24). They were a New Strides commissioned playwright (The Strides Collective)\, where they wrote the first act of their play 3 Women (‘24). They are a member of Azuka Theatre’s Rising Writers program as well as Matchbox Theatre’s Playwrights Group. They studied as a playwright at the National Theatre Institute’s Summer Theatermakers Intensive program (‘23)\, where they were awarded a Miranda Family Fellowship (‘23-current). Their work at Azuka Theatre in Philadelphia includes a staged reading of their full-length play All-of-the-Above Jesus (‘23)\, their one-act play “Prophets” (‘22)\, and as a teaching artist in Azuka’s Community Engagement Project\, “Community Stories” (‘23-Current). Their play All-of-the-Above Jesus received a reading from the Media Arts Council (‘23). They are a finalist for Big Idea Theatre’s One Act Festival (‘23) and PlayPenn’s The Foundry (‘22\, ‘24). They have also participated in Horizon Theatre’s New South Young Playwright’s Festival (‘22). Noah is a graduate of Temple University\, where they studied English and Theatre and Community Engagement/poetic ethnography (’22). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Series\n\n\n\nThe Media Arts Council (MAC) Play Reading Series was created by playwrights Julie Zaffarano\, Dave Ebersole\, and Keenya Jackson\, in partnership with the MAC to create a space for local playwrights to hear their work read by talented actors and receive feedback from a public audience. The only regular new play reading series in in the area\, it brings exciting new stories to Delaware County.Playwrights\, actors\, and directors who are interested in being involved in the series should contact Julie Zaffarano\, juliezaffarano.gmail.com. DESCRIPTION:Our stories connect workshop\n\n\n\nHow to Hold More Effective 1:1 Conversations\n\n\n\nIn this immersive 2.5-hour workshop\, participants will embark on a journey to master the art of storytelling while gaining a deeper understanding of biases—both conscious and unconscious—that shape our interactions. Designed for adult learners\, this workshop equips you with the skills to navigate and engage in meaningful\, sometimes uncomfortable\, one-on-one conversations. The workshop is divided into two key segments. The first focuses on helping you discover and articulate your own story\, enabling you to communicate authentically and effectively. The second segment delves into the complexities of biases\, exploring how they influence perceptions and interactions\, and providing tools to recognize and address them. SUMMARY:Fair Housing Tester Training
DESCRIPTION:The Housing Equality Center of Pennsylvania utilizes trained fair housing “testers” or mystery shoppers to help investigate allegations of housing discrimination. This workshop will train new testers on basic fair housing rights and responsibilities and on the process and procedures used in the testing of rental housing. After the training\, attendees will be able to participate in the Housing Equality Center’s fair housing testing program\, helping to combat discrimination in our region. Testers are compensated for their time and expenses. PLEASE SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER FOR FUTURE UPDATES! \n\n\n\nKyle McIntyre\, co-founder of UDTJ Upper Darby\, will share key insights from their journey as a grassroots organization\, focusing on the interconnected issues of LGBTQIIA+ justice\, community service\, and police accountability in Delaware County. The discussion will shed light on the challenges they have faced but also highlight the powerful lessons learned in navigating social justice organizing in Delaware County. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe mission of U.D.T.J. is to fight for equality and justice based on race\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, and across all intersectional identities. They seek to end systemic inequalities in Upper Darby\, Delaware County\, and beyond through community events\, service\, and programs. UDTJ stands for their 4 core principles: understanding\, devotion\, take action\, and justice. \n\n\n\nKyle T. McIntyre was born and raised in Upper Darby. Kyle graduated from Upper Darby High School in 2016 and Temple University with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science in 2020. Kyle recently graduated Temple University in 2021 with his Master Degree in Public Policy. \n\n\n\nKyle got involved because as an openly gay man he believes understanding intersectionality is part of the solution to discrimination in America. After briefly being involved in local politics and graduating from one of the most diverse high schools in the country\, he knew Upper Darby was not immune from the inequalities facing many marginalized communities in America. After the murder of George Floyd\, Kyle waited a week and saw no protests in Upper Darby\, starting with a Facebook event he partnered with the other co-founders to form U.D.T.J. to bring activism and momentum to Delaware County. \n\n\n\nKyle is passionately advocates for LGBTQ rights and the creation of inclusive LGBTQ+ spaces in Delaware County. In addition\, as a policy focus\, Kyle has a lot of passion for inclusionary zoning\, housing affordability\, community service and police accountability.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of service and fun as we create a beautiful garden at Martha Burton Park in South Media\, Nether Providence Township. This community event is co-organized by South Media Neighbors United\, Nether Providence Township\, and Media Fellowship House.Family friendly activities for all ages including: planting\, paver painting\, seed planting. Tools will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own. Parking is limited and we encourage you to carpool\, bike\, or walk if you can! \n\n\n\nA great opportunity to complete community service hours! \n\n\n\nRAIN DATE: Saturday\, June 15\, 9am – 1pm \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Volunteer\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Martha Burton Park\n\n\n\nThis half-acre pocket park at Ronaldson and Allen Streets in South Media was officially established in 1979 as a memorial for those who served in World War I. The tract was originally presented to the township in 1929 by prominent attorney and township resident A. B. Geary and his family.Mrs. Burton\, who has lived in South Media her entire life\, established and ran (in the late 60s and early 70s) a Community House On The Corner Of Wallingford Ave and Vernon St known as the South Media Community Center. She helped with the creation of youth summer jobs and organized activities for teenagers in the community\, including a pool for the community.  The center also became the the home of the South Media Boy Scout Troop.  Her guidance and leadership helped countless young teens in the community – instilling hard work and dedication that extends into generations. The park was renamed in 2020 in honor of her service to the community.
