SUMMARY:MAC Playreading Event: The Devil and His Blues
DESCRIPTION:Original Playreading Series:\n\n\n\nThe Devil and His Blues\n\n\n\nby Sam Watsondirected by Lisa Panzer\n\n\n\nIn the 1930s\, Ash Vinson\, a Black man desperate to prove his self-worth to God and the priest that raised him\, wants to use his music to raise enough money to save his home St. Michael’s Catholic Church from foreclosure. Ash’s ability to play guitar is horrendous\, though. So\, the Black man makes a deal with the Devil to become a fantastic Blues musician in return for his soul. But when Ash’s music threatens the power of the priest and ruffles the majority white community\, he courts danger and unravels a murderous conspiracy from decades ago. \n\n\n\n\n\nCast\n\n\n\nIykechi McCoy – Ash VinsonJaleel Lamont – Cam VinsonBeverly Gunn – Mae Vinson / Sally CookJason S. Tokarski – Father QuinnHeather Birmingham – Emma WallaceHeather Plank – Victoria WallaceSam Dressler – Ben Wallace / Clark GivensNikitas Menotiades – Officer Shea / Man in Black (Devil) \n\n\n\nAbout the Playwright\n\n\n\nSam Watson is a Black\, biracial\, Ukrainian American writer. His identity is a patchwork of pierogies\, collard greens and a whole lot of messiness. So writing about identity and the strain and expectations that society puts on people’s identities is really important to him. Also\, generational trauma runs deep in both sides of his family. The trauma of racism on his Black side and the trauma of war and genocide on his Ukrainian side. Writing about how trauma informs people’s actions and how oppressive systems shape their identities are staples of his work.  \n\n\n\nSam is the 2024/2023 Oscar Micheaux Prize winner and the 2023 winner of the Prime Time TV Pilot Prize (sponsored by Comcast & NBC Universal) in the Greater Philadelphia Film Office’s Set in Philadelphia Contest. One of his short scripts was a winner in the Four Walls Whiskey collaboration with the team from IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA. His short play “The Well at the End of the World” was performed at the Colonial Playhouse in 2023. And he also produced and cowrote a satire short called WOKE. \n\n\n\nSam is represented by Logical Talent Management. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Series\n\n\n\nThe Media Arts Council (MAC) Play Reading Series was created by playwrights Julie Zaffarano\, Dave Ebersole\, and Keenya Jackson\, in partnership with the MAC to create a space for local playwrights to hear their work read by talented actors and receive feedback from a public audience. The only regular new play reading series in the area\, it brings exciting new stories to Delaware County. \n\n\n\nPlaywrights\, actors\, and directors who are interested in being involved in the series should Dave Ebersole\, Keenya Jackson\, or Julie Zaffarano at macplayreadingseries20@gmail.com. Due to the limited budget for this project\, we are unable to offer actors or directors a stipend through the MAC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nTickets Pay what you wish – Suggested $10 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupporting local artists\n\n\n\nMedia Arts Council (MAC)\n\n\n\nMedia Fellowship House is thrilled to host Media Arts Council (MAC) programming in our space. Please check out the other great programming MAC offers! \n\n\n\nThe mission of the Media Arts Council is to actively support local artists and integrate a wide range of arts into the life of the entire community. MAC achieves this mission by providing professional artists with opportunities to exhibit\, sell\, and/or perform\, infusing Media with public art installations\, providing arts education classes\, and offering community arts events.  \n\n\n\n\nVisit MAC Website!

SUMMARY:The Landscape of the First Amendment: From the Civil Rights Era to Today
DESCRIPTION:Join us for learning and conversation.\n\n\n\nLee Rowland\, Director of the National Coalition Against Censorship\, will give a talk about the evolution of the First Amendment – from a once-overlooked constitutional right to the powerhouse it is today. She will discuss the First Amendment’s critical role in the Civil Rights movement – and the reciprocal impact that civil rights plaintiffs made on the evolving First Amendment. Rowland will trace the importance of our First Amendment to the history and health of our democracy and civic discourse\, and ask us all whether that role is intact today in a polarized\, digital age. Has the arc of the First Amendment brought us closer to justice?  Lee will present for approximately 45 minutes\, to be followed by a Q&A with participants. \n\n\n\nThis is a VIRTUAL EVENT. A Zoom Link and Calendar Invite will be sent to registered guests before the event. Please be certain to check your email for joining details. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\n\n\nLee Rowloand is the Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Censorship\, where she oversees NCAC’s direct program work\, legal and government advocacy\, and public education. She also runs the Free Expression Network\, a collaboration that brings together dozens of free expression advocates and organizations for regular strategy and information-sharing. Lee has extensive experience as a litigator\, professor\, and public speaker. Lee has been a First Amendment litigator for two decades\, serving as a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union\, the ACLU’s New York and Nevada state affiliates\, and the Brennan Center for Justice; she has also taught course in free expression at NYU Law and CUNY’s Hunter College’s Human Rights Program.  As Policy Director of the NY ACLU for over five years\, Lee is also a seasoned lobbyist and advocate for a range of civil liberties and free speech positions\, and helped draft and pass NY’s recent Equal Rights Amendment. Lee lives in Brooklyn and is addicted to Tetris.  \n\n\n\nThis event is co-hosted by Media Fellowship House and Media Area NAACP.
