October 17 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
On Saturday, October 17, members of our Youth Coalition will be collecting feminine hygiene products from 1-3 pm on the porch of Media Fellowship House. All donations will be delivered to the Philadelphia based nonprofit No More Secrets, which distributes almost 200 three-month supplies of menstrual products to women in the Greater Philadelphia area each week.
Women all over the world – including the Philadelphia area – experience significant challenges each month when it comes to menstrual hygiene. Many states in the US consider feminine hygiene products “luxury goods,” and impose sales tax on them. Also, feminine hygiene products cannot be purchased with food stamps, Medicaid, or health insurance spending accounts. According to the 2014 Shriver Report, at least 42 million American women live in poverty, and are thus at risk of not being able to care for themselves during menstruation. Without a supply of feminine hygiene products, women’s ambitions for education, economic empowerment, and other social and community endeavors are greatly affected. These women often do not leave their homes and miss school, work, and other activities every single month.
Requested items include pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and other products. Contact-free curbside pick-up will be available.
